Kid’s Guide to Creating a DIY Moon Lamp with Mom

In a world where all kids do is watch screens, finding meaningful ways to connect with our little ones can sometimes feel like a challenge –but a happy challenge. What if we told you that bonding with your child could be as simple as crafting a DIY lamp together?

Picture this: you and your little one gathered together, surrounded by crafting supplies and giggles, as you create your own moon lamp.

But, before you wonder how to build it, let’s play some background music on an alarm clock with FM so that you can hear the sweet symphony in the background while you work.

Now that the music is playing, you’re all set, and it’s time to start building your lamp.

Step-by-Step Guide to DIY Moon Lamp

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

The first step for any project is gathering the necessary supplies; creating a moon lamp is no different. You’ll need a round balloon, white glue, water, a brush, a bowl, a small LED light or string lights, and some tissue paper in shades of white and gray. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the supplies on hand – half the fun is getting creative with what you have, or you can always take a trip to the nearest stationary shop and get your stuff.

Step 2: Inflate the Balloon

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, it’s time to blow the balloon as big as you want your moon lamp. This step is perfect for involving your child – let them take charge of blowing up the balloon while you supervise and tell them to fill it until it becomes round like a moon. This part will be full of laughter and giggles (some balloons might even burst)

Step 3: Ready The Glue Solution

Next, it’s time to mix up your glue solution. In a bowl, combine white glue and water in equal parts, stirring until the mixture is smooth and well combined. This will help to keep your tissue on the balloon.

Step 4: Stick the Tissue Paper

Now comes the fun part – applying the tissue paper to the balloon to create the textured surface of the moon. Tear the tissue paper into strips and dip them into the glue solution, ensuring they’re thoroughly coated. Then, press gently on the balloon’s surface, overlapping the pieces to create a bumpy texture, but leave the space where there is the balloon knot. You and your kid can do this step together.

Step 5: Let It Dry

Once you’ve covered the entire surface of the balloon with tissue paper, set it aside to dry for 6-8 hours. You can also set an alarm on the alarm clock with FM so that you get a reminder that your balloon is dry. We know it’s hard to wait for the tissue to dry, but the wait will be worth it.

Step 6: Pop the Balloon

It’s time to pop the balloon and reveal your beautiful moon lamp! Use a pin or sharp object to gently burst the balloon, being careful not to damage the delicate tissue paper surface. As the balloon shrinks and pulls away from the tissue paper, you’ll be left with a round shell that resembles the moon.

Step 7: Add the Light

Finally, it’s time to bring your moon lamp to life by adding the light source. Insert a small LED light or string light into the opening of the lamp, allowing it to illuminate the delicate tissue paper surface from within. You and your child will feel wonder as the light shines through the textured layers, casting a soft, ethereal glow.

By working together to bring a little piece of the moon into your home, you’ll not only create a beautiful decorative piece but also strengthen the bond between you and your child. Now, go ahead –get creating.
